CASTIGLIONE DELLA PESCAIA AND MAREMMA TUSCANY

Discover Maremma Tuscany

The town of Castiglione della Pescaia and its surroundings

Castiglione della Pescaia is a small seaside town, situated in the northern part of Maremma Tuscany, 20 km from Grosseto. With its 8500 inhabitants, it prides itself on being one of the main summer destinations for Italian and foreign tourists who love its sea, coastline and landscapes. Awarded in 2005, 2014, 2015 and 2016 with 5 blue sails by the non-governmental environmentalist organization Legambiente for the quality of the water and recognised as one of the main Italian tourist destinations by Legambiente and Touring Club. Also known as Switzerland of Maremma, this wonderful town underwent its major development between 1700 and 1800.

From the west side of Castiglione della Pescaia is possible to explore marvellous beaches with crystal clear water such as Le Rocchette, Punta Ala, Casetta Civinini, Cala Violina and Cala Martina. On the east side of the town, where Hotel Perla is located, there is a very long, sandy beach all the way to Marina di Grosseto and the Natural Park of Uccellina.

There are several monuments and historical buildings in our Tuscan town, symbolising the history of this area, amongst these are Red House of Ximenes, Pretorio Palace, Church of Santa Maria del Giglio and Church of San Giovanni Battista.

Driving about an hour south east, you can visit the famous Saturnia Hot Springs and the astonishing towns of Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana, which are also known as the “città del tufo” because they are built on “tufo” rocks. Argentario and Capalbio are wonderful seaside destinations if driving south on the coast. Driving north, you can visit Massa Marittima and Bolgheri area, where one of the best wines in the world is produced. Also easy to reach are Siena, Montalcino and Monte Amiata when driving inland.
